Davis Abortion Letter Inaccurate, Opponent Says
JOHNSON CITY, TN - Desperate to shore up his diminishing support with pro-life Republicans, David Davis wrote in a letter dated July 2, 2008, "My opponent does not have a defined position on abortion."
Roe Campaign Manager Keith Spicer responded, “Phil Roe is pro-life, and David Davis knows it. David is getting scared because pro-lifers know that Dr. Roe will do more for their cause than just voting the right way when the time comes. David also knows that no amount of pandering or inaccurate innuendos can make up for Dr. Roe’s impeccable pro-life credentials.”
Dr. Phil Roe issued the following statement about his abortion stance:
“It is so sad that the mother’s womb is one of the most dangerous places a child can be. Every day 3,562 children are surgically aborted in the United States. Since 1973 it’s been more than 50 million. They are a generation forever lost and unknown to the world. They cannot live because they were never given the chance. Every 25 seconds, another innocent victim joins their ranks.
“I commend David Davis for his pro-life voting record, but I submit that I am uniquely qualified to deliver to Washington the voices of those who cannot speak for themselves and who ask for nothing more than a chance to live.
“My beliefs on this issue have always been clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering. Pro-Life isn’t just a political position I take. It is a fundamental part of who I am and how I have lived my life.
“For over 35 years, I’ve made my living being pro-life. As a high risk pregnancy specialist, I’ve saved both babies and mothers without abortion. I’ve donated my services to crisis pregnancy programs, and my wife has served on their boards. As a Congressman I will bring to the table unique insights into these issues that few politicians can match.
“Advances in technology such as the 3-D ultrasound have given us windows to the womb that reveal unborn children as living, breathing, feeling human beings. I have looked through that window with my own eyes.
“I have been blessed to deliver almost 5,000 children, and I know that human life is God’s most precious miracle. I will always fight for the right to life because it is my conviction that we are all unique creations of a God who loves us and knows us before we are even conceived.
“Since it is an irrefutable fact that life begins at conception, we must make our laws consistent with our science and restore full legal protections to all who are waiting to be born. If government has any valid duty, it is to protect innocent life, and I wholeheartedly support the proposed Human Life Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“In Congress I will fight to move this amendment forward, and I will work for parental consent, ultrasound-informed consent, 48-hour waiting periods, hospitalization requirements, and any other legislation that will protect women and children from the tragedy that is abortion.”
