Congressional Candidate Phil Roe Signs Taxpayer Protection Pledge

JOHNSON CITY, TN -- In a show of dedication to the fight against higher taxes, Congressional Candidate Dr. Phil Roe has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.

The Pledge, sponsored by the non-profit group Americans for Tax Reform, is a written promise that commits candidates to oppose any effort to increase taxes on individuals and businesses.

“For some politicians, the greatest pleasure in the world is to spend other people’s money,” Roe said. “Taxes aren’t something you owe to the government, but something the government takes away from you.”

In addition to opposing increases in marginal tax rates, the Pledge promises opposition to any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless they are coupled with equivalent tax cuts.

“If taxes are low, politicians have less of your money to waste, and less control over your life,” Roe said. “ Liberty increases as government decreases.”

Roe believes his real-life experience outside of government will help him in the fight against higher taxes for Tennesseans.

“Career politicians in both parties lack the backbone to say ‘no’ to the noisy, well-funded special interests in Washington,” he said. “As a doctor, I’ve had to make tough decisions that literally involved life and death. Compared to that, standing up to big money and fighting for lower taxes should be no problem at all.”

The Roe campaign is not accepting any money from political action committees or special interest groups.

“No one deserves special treatment,” Roe said, “but everyone deserves equal access to their Congressman. Why should people have to pay for the ‘privilege’ of talking to a Congressman who supposedly works for them?

“If elected to serve, I won’t forget who I’m working for -- the taxpayers of the First District. It is their voice I will hear. After all, that’s what my campaign centers on: people, not politics.”

Roe is seeking the Republican nomination for the First Congressional District House seat. The Republican primary will be held on August 7.
